Derek Dooley was officially introduced as Tennessee football's new head coach Friday night.

During an evening press conference inside Neyland Stadium's Peyton Manning Locker Room Complex, the former Louisiana Tech head coach showed honesty and enthusiasm about taking over a football program with a long and rich tradition.

"I'm humbled, honored to stand before you as the next head football coach at the University of Tennessee," said Dooley. "I grew up in the SEC and it didn't take me long as a youngster to realize that Tennessee was the essence of college football."

Dooley quickly let his quaint personality shine as he recalled childhood memories of watching former UT head coach Johnny Majors on television. Dooley also mentioned his admiration for Phillip Fulmer and his goal of coaching with similar honor.

The 41-year old Dooley just completed his third season as head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he compiled an overall record of 17-20. The Bulldogs were just 4-8 in 2009. He also served as athletic director during his stay.

After he joked about the fact that the decision to hire Dooley was made about five hours before the press conference, athletics director Mike Hamilton said he was comfortable with Dooley after their first conversation.

"I have respect for the people he's worked with," said Hamilton. "I knew that he's been trained well for this moment."

Dooley was adamant that he would not make statements of what the program would specifically accomplish because not all will be smooth, but he did make one promise:

"Everything we're going to do is going to be with a foundation of integrity in every aspect of the program," said Dooley. "We're going to represent this institution with class on and off the field. We're going to be a fun team to watch by how we compete, by the effort that we give, by the togetherness and spirit that we play with."

Dooley was Alabama head coach Nick Saban's recruiting coordinator at LSU when the Tigers landed multiple highly-ranked recruiting classes. Dooley was also on Saban's staff with the NFL's Miami Dolphins, serving as tight ends coach for two seasons.

Dooley said he was grateful to Saban for giving him opportunities for great experience, but when the opportunity arose to be a head coach at Louisiana Tech, he had to take it.

"I'm sure if I had stayed with Nick that I might have been a more popular candidate for this job now, but I am certain that I am a better and more qualified candidate by doing what I did the last three years."

Dooley was born in Athens, Ga., to legendary Georgia coach Vince Dooley. He said there was no way that he could immediately convince the fans of his long-term plans to stay, but cited his family as being important to him, and that every move they make for his career gets tougher and tougher on them.

Due to the time-constraints of his hire, Dooley didn't have many specifics about his future staff.

"Every staff member can't be a headliner to make a good staff, because a staff is a team," said Dooley. "What I'm more concerned about is who wants to be here, who's going to believe in how we're going to run our organization..."

Dooley declined to comment on Kiffin's conduct and leaving.

"I'm worried about Tennessee," said Dooley. "I think when you worry about someone else and what other people are doing then you're not taking care of your own house."

Dooley now looks to the future, but says he has to be short-sighted and take things one step at a time.

"I've never been more excited about the future for my family and for a program and for living then I am right now," said Dooley. "I'm excited about what the future hold for Tennessee."

ESPN.com news services are reporting that UT head football coach Lane Kiffin has agreed to replace Pete Carroll as head coach of Southern California.

Sources also say that Kiffin will take father Monte as defensive coordinator, as well as assistant head coach Ed Orgeron.

Senior point guard Bobby Maze scored 16 points, dished out eight assists and pulled down seven rebounds, and sophomore Scotty Hopson added a team-high 17 points as No. 16 Tennessee overcame suspensions and foul trouble to defeat top-ranked Kansas 76-68 Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The Vols won in spite of playing with a limited rotation due to the dismissal of Tyler Smith and indefinite suspensions of three other Vols. UT used nine players, including three walk-ons, during the game.

"We had three walk-ons play 45 minutes," Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said. "We obviously hit some very special shots and made some very special plays, and the stars have to align a little bit to beat the No. 1 team in the country."

Kansas jumped out to an early lead before Tennessee's Renaldo Woolridge heated up from outside. The sophomore, who played sparingly before the suspensions of four teammates, connected on three straight 3-pointers midway through the first half to tie the score 19-19.

The Vols built on the momentum and pulled ahead 27-21, but Kansas ended the half on a 12-6 run to leave the score tied 33-33 at the half.

After the teams went back and forth to open the second half, UT pulled ahead 49-42 with 14:02 to play when Woolridge connected on his fourth 3-pointer of the game to set a career high. The sophomore tied career highs in both points with 14 and rebounds with eight.

However, less than a minute later the Vols found themselves in serious foul trouble when Wayne Chism and J.P. Prince each picked up a fourth personal foul. Neither would return to the game until there was under five minutes left to play.

UT still managed to build on the lead and gained its largest lead of the game when walk-on Josh Bone connected on a 3-pointer to put the Vols up 53-44 with 11:38 to play. Four minutes later, fellow walk-on Skylar McBee connected on a long range shot to give the team an eight-point lead before the Jayhawks mounted a comeback.

Tyshawn Taylor connected on a pair of free throws to cap off a 12-4 Kansas run and tie the score 64-64 with 4:20 left in the contest, but the Vols pulled back ahead on the next possession. Maze connected on a jumper late in the shot clock, and the Vols went on to score seven straight points to go up 71-64 with under two minutes remaining.

Kansas narrowed its deficit to three when Taylor hit a 3-pointer following a turnover by Chism on an ill-advised behind the back dribble. However, McBee drained an off-balanced 3 as the shot clock expired with 36 seconds remaining to put the Vols back in control.

"My thing was - was McBee's shot worth how many hours in the gym?" said Pearl. "When other kids were doing everything else, you could see McBee in the gym practicing all night long. It paid off...that's the beautiful thing about sports."

Sherron Collins scored a team-high 22 points for the Jayhawks in the team's first loss of the season. The senior struggled from long range, though, going just 2-for-10 from behind the arc. As a team the Jayhawks shot just 7-for-27 from 3-point range. Center Cole Aldrich pulled in 18 rebounds, but was held to just seven points on five shots.

"I think Tennessee deserved to win the game," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "They outplayed us, without question. It was a total lack of us being 'as one' today. I thought we were guys on islands. I thought we were looking out for ourselves.

"When you talk about all the stuff they have been through, I do not think Tennessee was a team until this past week. I do not think Kansas is a team yet."

Pearl credited the home crowd for creating a tough environment for Kansas to visit. Announced attendance was 21,936.

"The crowd was amazing. What that says is we have got a basketball program here - a basketball program capable of beating the No. 1 team in the country."

The Vols return to action Thursday night when they open SEC play at home against Auburn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., with television coverage on ESPN2. The Jayhawks next play Wednesday night, with a visit to Nebraska set to open Big 12 play.

Tyler Smith, Cameron Tatum, Melvin Goins, and Brian Williams were arrested Friday morning when their vehicle was pulled over outside of Knoxville for speeding. The vehicle ended up having two handguns, marijuana, and an open alcohol container.

Triple Threat Sports host final episode

Today is the final episode of the semester for Andrew, Drew, and John so it is only fitting they end it the same way they have continued it this season, by talking about the scene in popular sports.

In the UT Roundup, the guys will be going over an ugly game down in Oxford, Mississippi and talk about where the football team stands heading into its matchup against Vandy on Saturday.

As for the rest of college football, the Triple Threat will talk about how the Stanford Cardinal is rapidly taking over the Pac-10 after beating USC this week.

In the NFL, the two unbeaten teams are still rolling. The guys will be in the studio talking about potential roadblocks that could trip up the Colts and Saints on their road to on undefeated season.

In the NBA, the Atlanta Hawks are taking care of business at 10-2, is it surprising that they are doing so well or is it a weak schedule thus far that has given them such a good record?

Jimmie Johnson won over the weekend in Phoenix, the Sprint Cup Championship is all his right now with one race left. The Triple Threat will go over what J.J. needs to do in order to clinch his 4th straight NASCAR Championship.

Three UT football players arrested for attempted armed robbery near campus

Knoxville Police arrested three UT football players, including freshmen Janzen Jackson and Nu'keese Richardson, this morning after they committed attempted armed robbery at the Pilot convenience store on Cumberland Ave.

The Knoxville New Sentinel reports the three men got into a 2010 Toyota Prius driven by a woman and fled the area.

Any decisions or comments regarding their status will not be made until the evaluations are complete. UT Athletic Director Mike Hamilton

UT Athletic Director Mike Hamilton released a brief statement this morning saying UT will look into the events.

"At this time we are currently evaluating the circumstances surrounding an incident involving Mike Edwards, Janzen Jackson and Nu'Keese Richardson." Hamilton said.

"Any decisions or comments regarding their status will not be made until the evaluations are complete."

Reports say KPD found a pellet gun in the players' car after they were stopped near Gibbs Hall, where they live.

According to ESPN's Joe Schad, Head Coach Lane Kiffin mentioned not having any arrests earlier this week and boasted the current Vols having the highest team GPA in five years.

Jackson served a one-game suspension for disciplinary reasons in Tennessee 56-28 win over Memphis on Saturday.

Richardson missed Sunday practice leading up to the win over Memphis as he dealt with what was reported to be "personal issues".

Head coach Lane Kiffin later said Richardson had "no situation".

Richardson rebounded from the missed practice to score his first career touchdown as a Vol against Memphis on Saturday.

Pilot is owned by Jim Haslam, a former UT football player and major financial contributor to both the school and UT athletics.

It was another big week in sports which was highlighted by a huge Halloween win by the Tennessee Football team. The Triple Threat will be on hand to talk about the big win and its implications for the team and the rest of the SEC in the UT Roundup segment of the show.

Not only did the football team continue its recent dominance, but in Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees clinched their 27th World Series Championship last night at the New Yankee Stadium. Andrew, Drew, and John will talk about how this big win for the Yankees gives some of their players legitimate hall of fame considerations.

There are two undefeated teams left in the NFL after the Denver Broncos lost last week. Can the Saints go marching on and will the Colts get their dominance back after a scare at home against San Francisco? The Triple Threat will talk about the contenders and pretenders in the NFL at the halfway point.

In the NHL, the Washington Capitals have lost superstar, Alex Ovechkin for a few weeks due to an injury. Andrew will talk about the implications of their big loss for the Caps.

Penguins, surprising Colorado Avalanche, lead NHL Power Rankings

Alex Ovechkin is already in mid-season form. In 15 he has scored 14 goals, and he tied an NHL record with six multi-goal games in the month of October. The two-time reigning MVP has his team atop the Southeast division and second in the Eastern Conference.

The Colorado Avalanche is one the surprise teams of the season. The team is a mix of proven veterans and rookies. Joining Colorado in the category of surprising: the Los Angeles Kings. Center Anze Kopitar is off to a great start with 21 points, tied for second in the NHL.

1. Pittsburgh Penguins - Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are playing like the All-Stars they are. When they are on, can any team keep up? Possibly not, but Malkin's recent injury could allow some other teams to narrow the gap in the standings.

2. Colorado Avalanche - Their record stands for itself. They have wins over some of the leagues' best teams including two wins over the Reds Wings.

3. Washington Capitals - Alex Ovechkin + Alex Semin + Nicklas Backstrom = Best Line In Hockey. The three have combined for 25 goals and 31 assists.

4. Los Angeles Kings - With an average age under 24 years old, the Kings are a young team that doesn't know any better. Why can't they compete?

5. Buffalo Sabres - No player is standing out offensively, with no Sabre amassing more than 10 points thus far. Then again, that's fine when your goalie is Ryan Miller. He's allowing a pencil-thin 1.86 goals-per-game.

6. Chicago Blackhawks - Despite the fact that they are leading the Central Division, Patrick's Sharp and Kane need to step up. Goaltending has also been an issue. They are a talented team, but if they want to go all the way, they need to improve.

7. San Jose Sharks - The Sharks have four players with more than 12 points. The Dany Heatley trade has proven to be a good move thus far.

8. Calgary Flames - Jarome Iginla has underachieved, but Rene Bourque and Dion Phaneuf have carried the load. Miikka Kiprusoff hasn't been great either. He has a goals-against-average of 3.00 and a save-percentage of .900.

9. New York Rangers - Goalie Henrik Lundqvist has been solid. He ranks second in the NHL in saves with 379. Marian Gaborik's fast start (t-5th in NHL with 19 points) has been big for the Rangers as well.

10. Phoenix Coyotes - Who would have thought that the Coyotes would be competitive? Ilya Bryzgalov's netminding has been amazing. He ranks second in the NHL in goals against average and third in save percentage (among goalies with 10 or more starts).

Ice Bears exterminate FireAntz

The Knoxville Ice Bears defeated the Fayetteville FireAntz 7-2 Thursday night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.

Ice Bears Left Winger Mike Bulawka scored a goal during each period for a hat trick.

Forward Robert Sich scored the only two goals for the FireAntz

Ice Bears goalie Andrew Gallant made 24 saves for a .923 save percentage.

The Ice Bears got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first three minutes. Randy Johnson beat FireAntz goalie Guy St. Vincent glove side for the game's first goal. Just over a minute later, Mike Bulawka scores on an odd man rush to make it 2-0. Forward Robert Sich scored the first of his two goals to put the FireAntz on the board at the 9:16 mark in the first. At the end of the first period, Knoxville led 2-1.

In the second, the Ice Bears scored two more time. Knoxville's third goal was an unassisted power play goal scored by Travis Hanson. The fourth goal was also a power play goal tapped in by Bulawka after a pass in-front-of the crease by Grant Farrell. Eight penalties were handed out in this period.

The Ice Bears continued their dominance in the third. Bulawka scored his third goal of the night to give the Ice Bears a 5-1 lead. Tommy McMonagle and Kevin Swider added two more for the Ice Bears, while Robert Sich scored his second for the FireAntz.

When the game was over, Knoxville lit the lamp seven times while Fayetteville only mustered two goals. The next home game for the Ice Bears will be College Night on Nov. 5 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.
